Cyntoia Brown: 28 facts about her life before and after her sentence

Cyntoia Brown, one of the most known imprisoned people in the world. Her story is full of dark twists and turn.

  1. Her full name is Cyntoia Denise Mitchell Brown.
  2. She was born to Georgina Mitchell in Tennessee on January 29, 1988.
  3. Her father is unknown.
  4. Cyntoia Brown’s mother drank alcohol during her pregnacy.
  5. This lead to her having been born with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.
  6. Her mother’s use of crack cocaine begun immediately after she was born.
  7. Cyntoia Brown was put up for adoption, due to her mother being unable to cater for her.
  8. She was adopted by Ellenette Brown, also known as Ellenette Washington.
  9. In spite of her stable upbringing she ran away from home at the age of 16.
  10. Cyntoia began staying with a man named Garion McGlothen Jarvis at an InTown Suites.
  11. She was forced by him to sex- trafficking.
  12. This was their main source of income.
  13. She was threatened, beaten, and raped by Garion McGlothen on multiple occasions.
  14. Cyntoia Brown murdered Johnny Mitchell Allen on the 5th of August in 2004.
  15. Johnny Mithecll Allen paid her for sexual encounter.
  16. She shot him in the back of the head using her .40-caliber handgun, during the encounter.
  17. She then absconded in Allen’s Ford F-150 in possession of his wallet and two of his firearms.Allen’s wallet allegedly contained US$172.
  18. Cyntoia Brown was arrested and charged with one count of premeditated murder, one count of murder, and one count of aggravated robbery.
  19. Despite her age of 16, she was tried as an adult.
  20. She never denied shooting him.
  21. She claimed was an act of self defense.
  22. Throught the investigation police believed otherwise and so Cyntoia Brown was found guilty of murder.
  23. Her sentence is 51 years to life in prison.
  24. She would have been eligible for parole at age 67.
  25. The Tennessee Supreme Court issued a ruling on Cyntoia Brown’s case, stating that she would be eligible for parole after serving 51 years.
  26. On January 7, 2019, Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam announced he was commuting Cyntoia Brown’s sentence of life in prison to 15 years already served, plus 10 years of supervised parole, starting on August 7th, 2019.
  27. Brown will be released on August 7, 2019, after spending 15 years in prison.
  28. Her life was made in a 2011 documentary, called Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s Story.
