Only some of the gold diggers (about four out of 1000) were fortunate enough to find gold and this was often referred to as a lucky strike. By choosing this expression as the product’s name, it meant consumers who were choosing the brand were lucky, as they were choosing a top-quality blend. Lucky Strike was a brand of chewing tobacco, and by the early 1900s, it had evolved into a cigarette.

In a famous advertising campaign that used the slogan “Lucky Strike Green has gone to war”, the company claimed the change was made because the copper used in the green color was needed for World War II. A limited supply of each was available, and substitute materials made the package look drab.

12. The white package actually was introduced to modernize theand to increase the appeal of the package among female smokers; market studies showed that the green package was not found attractive to women, who had become important consumers of tobacco products.

  • I was told a long time ago (when I started smoking as a teenager) that the name Lucky Strike was chosen because the unique method of producing it (toasting the tobacco rather than sun-drying it) was discovered quite by accident, following a partial fire in a tobacco warehouse. The tobacco grower thought the heavily smoked-up batch of tobacco would be ruined, but was amazed to find that it actually tasted much better and decided to recreate the process artificially. Believing this to have been a stroke of luck, he named his tobacco "Lucky Strike".
I searched all over the Internet for confirmation of this story and haven't been able to find a single reference to it, leading me to conclude that it was either an urban myth going round at the time, or a complete (but rather clever) fabrication on the part of my friend who told me this bit of trivia.
I am embarrassed to admit that I believed it 100% until now and have in fact passed it onto other people, who were equally fascinated (and fooled) by it...
    It sounds feasible though, right?

  • Yes I'm a lucky smoker also but the lady in the find poster isn't because she's smoking a cigarette with a filter on the end of it how could that be you guys don't have filters on the red pack "aye"
