Romans used to wear their wedding ring on the left ring finger as they considered it to ‘trap’ the vein which leads to heart. This is why they had named it as “Vena Amoris”, which means “vein of love”.
After Christianity’ s coming people still used to wear a wedding ring but this time on the right hand. The first three fingers were dedicated to religion, whereas the fourth was dedicated to their spouse.
