Iran: 20 facts you must know about the country

Iran is a  state in Western Asia.

Iran is known as a country that is home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations, beginning with the formation of the Elamite kingdoms in the fourth millennium BCE.

These are some facts you should know about the country: 

  1. The name «Iran» derives from Middle Persian Ērān.
  2. The Greek historian referred to Iran as Persia.
  3. Reza Shah requested  the international community to refer to the country by its native name, Iran, in 1935.
  4. Iran is   bordered to the northwest by Armenia , the Azeri exclave of Nakhchivan, and the Republic of Azerbaijan. To the north by the Caspian Sea, to the northeast by Turkmenistan, to the east by Afghanistan  and Pakistan. To the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman and to the west by Iraq and Turkey.
  5. Foxes, gazelles, gray wolves, jackals, panthers, and wild pigs are some of the animals that compose Iran’s wildlife.
  6. Five regions with thirty-one provinces divide Iran.
  7. Tehran is the capital of the country.
  8. Twelver Shia Islam is the official state religion.
  9. You will find a lot of diversity in the Iranian cuisine. People use herbs and lots of fruits such as plums, pomegranate, quince, prunes, apricots, and raisins. Saffron, dried lime, cinnamon, and parsley are also some things they use to create balanced dishes.
  10. The official language of the country is  Persian and the majority of the population speaks it.
  11. Iran hosts one of the largest refugee populations in the world.
  12. The economy of Iran is a  mixture of central planning, state ownership of oil and other large enterprises, village agriculture, and small-scale private trading and service ventures.
  13. There are two types of armed forces in Iran.: The regular forces of the Army, the Air Force, and the Navy, and the Revolutionary Guards, totaling about 545,000 active troops.
  14. Iran’s rich cultural legacy is reflected in part by its 22 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
  15. The Supreme Leader of Iran is Ali Khamenei and the President is Hassan Rouhani.
  16. Iran’s popylation, in 2017, was estimated to 81,000,000 people.
  17. Iranians drive from the right side.
  18. In northern Iran, you will find the  Persian leopard, which is the world’s largest leopard subspecies living primarily.
  19. After Tehran- which is the capita;- the most popular tourist destinations in Iran are Isfahan, Mashhad, and Shiraz.
  20. Iran is rated fourth among the top 10 destinations in the Middle East, according to the UNESCO and the deputy head of research for Iran’s Tourism Organization, but because of the lack of advertisement and the poor image it projects to the world, a lot of tourist do not plan their vacations to the country and domestic tourism is one of the largest in the world.
