  35. He turned around the school’s losing program and helped it earn two National Invitation Tournament (NIT) bids
  36. And one NCAA Tournament appearance in five years
  37. Next, at Richmond, he reached the NCAA Tournament once
  38. And NIT twice in five years
  39. He moved on to West Virginia
  40. There his teams reached the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament twice
  41. And also twice went to the NIT
  42. Including one championship
  43. At Michigan, he has won two Big Ten regular-season championships
  44. Two Big Ten Tournament titles
  45. And in the NCAA Tournament has twice advanced as far as the national championship game
  46. He has a 26 – 13 career record in the NCAA tournament
  47. With championship game appearances in 2013 and 2018
  48. As well as a 13 – 6 record in the NIT
  49. Beilein married the former Kathleen Griffin in 1978
  50. The Beileins have three sons
  51. Patrick, who played for his father at WVU and is the current head basketball coach at Niagara University
  52. Mark, a former football player at Richmond and WVU grad who currently works for Alro Steel
  53. And Andrew, a Michigan grad who currently works for the Business Roundtable in Washington, D.C.

  55. Patrick was the 2002 Virginia Independent Schools Division I Player of the Year
  56. He had intended to play at Richmond with his father
  57. And instead went to West Virginia when his father moved there
  58. Patrick was a 2008-2009 season graduate assistant coach at University of Michigan
  59. He has since held posts as assistant coach at Dartmouth, Director of Men’s Basketball Operations at Bradley University, and head coach of West Virginia Wesleyan College

  61. When Patrick was a highly recruited high school basketball player, John was restricted by NCAA rules from some normal behaviors regarding his son
  62. Such as giving his son’s teammates a ride home from practice, talking with his son at a basketball camp or discussing his son’s abilities with news media
  63. Because the interactions of college coaches with recruits are restricted
  64. The relevant NCAA rules for recruiting (Bylaw article 13) are quite extensive
  65. Beilein had to follow recruiting rules when visiting his son at a basketball camp
  66. According to rule 13.12.1.3 coaches wishing to attend a camp as observers must comply with appropriate recruiting contact and evaluation periods
  67. According to 13.02.3, a contact includes any face-to-face encounter between a prospective student-athlete
  68. And an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting
  69. In short, talking to coaches not employed by a camp is not allowed during the camp
  70. Which left Beilein unable to offer his son milk money
