Chris Jericho Trivia: 22 intriguing facts about the wrestler!

Chris Jericho is a Canadian American professional wrestler, musician, media personality, actor, author, podcaster, and businessman signed to WWE on the SmackDown brand, where he is currently on a hiatus due to tour with Fozzy.

Let’s see some fun facts about him!

1. Christopher Keith Irvine was born November 9, 1970 in Manhasset, New York.

2. His father, ice hockey player Ted Irvine, had relocated there to play for the New York Rangers. When his father retired, they moved back to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

3. Irvine’s interest in professional wrestling began when he started watching the local AWA events that took place at the Winnipeg Arena with his family, and his desire to become a professional wrestler himself began when he saw footage of Owen Hart, then appearing with Stampede Wrestling, performing various high-flying wrestling moves. In addition to Hart, Irvine also cited Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and Shawn Michaels as inspirations for his becoming a professional wrestler.

4. His first experience with a professional wrestling promotion was when he acted as part of the ring crew for the first tour of the newly opened Keystone Wrestling Alliance promotion, where he learned important pointers from independent wrestlers Catfish Charlie and Caveman Broda.

5. He also took a course in creative communication at Red River Community College in Winnipeg, where he graduated with top honors.

6. At age 19, he entered the Hart Brothers School of Wrestling, where he met Lance Storm on his first day. He was trained by Ed Langley and local Calgary wrestler Brad Young.

7. In 1991, Jericho and Storm started touring in Japan for Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling as Sudden Impact, where he befriended Ricky Fuji, who also trained under Stu Hart.

8. In the winter of 1992, he travelled to Mexico and competed under the name Leon D’Oro (“Golden Lion”), and later Corazón de León (“Lion Heart”), where he wrestled for several small wrestling companies, as well as the largest in the country, Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL).

9. In CMLL, Jericho took on Silver King, Negro Casas, and Último Dragón en route to an eleven-month reign as the NWA Middleweight Champion that began in December 1993.

10. After leaving Mexico, Jericho wrestled in Hamburg, Germany for six weeks as part of a tournament run by Rene Lasartesse

11. 1994 saw Jericho reunited with Storm, as The Thrillseekers in Jim Cornette’s Appalachian Smoky Mountain Wrestling (SMW) promotion, where they feuded with the likes of Well Dunn, The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express, and The Heavenly Bodies.

12. Between WWE (formerly the World Wrestling Federation), Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW) – the three most prominent American professional wrestling promotions of the 1990s and early 2000s – Jericho has won 32 titles. He also found championship success while performing for international promotions in countries such as Canada, Japan and Mexico.

13. Jericho is the first Undisputed WWF Champion, and thus the final holder of the World Championship (formerly the WCW World Heavyweight Championship), having won and unified the WWF and World titles by defeating Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock on the same night in 2001.

14. He is also the ninth Triple Crown Champion, as well as the fourth Grand Slam Champion in WWE history.

15. Jericho was the 2008 Superstar of the Year Slammy Award winner and (along with Big Show as Jeri-Show) won the 2009 Tag Team of the Year Slammy Award – making him the only winner of both Superstar and Tag Team of the Year in WWE history.

16. Jericho is a six-time world champion, having won the WWF Championship once, the WCW/World Championship twice, and WWE’s World Heavyweight Championship three times.

17. He is also a record nine-time Intercontinental Champion, beating out four other contenders in a 2013 WWE fan poll to determine the greatest champion in history with a landslide 63% of the vote.

18. He is also a two time United States Champion having won the title in 2016 and 2017. Jericho has headlined multiple pay-per-view events during his time with the company, including a performance as the Undisputed WWF Champion at WrestleMania X8 in 2002.

19. Baltimore Sun writer Kevin Eck wrote that Jericho “has proved to be one of best all-around performers in the business”, particularly “regarded as one of the very best talkers”.

20. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter named Jericho the “Best on Interviews” for the 2000s, and in 2010, inducted him into its Hall of Fame.

21. Outside of professional wrestling, Jericho became the lead vocalist of the band Fozzy in 1999. Their eponymous debut album (2000) and Happenstance (2002) consist of cover songs and original music; later records All That Remains (2005), Chasing the Grail (2010), Sin and Bones (2012) and Do You Wanna Start a War (2014) are comprised entirely or predominantly of original compositions.

22. Jericho also competed in the 2011 series of Dancing With the Stars, lasting until the sixth week. Prior to this, he hosted the ABC game show Downfall and the Revolver Golden Gods Awards.
