Which was the first and only disease to have been eradicated?

Luckily, scientific and medical development have led to the decreasing or even disappearance of several diseases.

A very typical, as well as important example is the eradication of smallpox, where vaccinations played a major role.

Smallpox is the first and only disease that has ever been eradicated and it now only exists in high security labs in Russia and the US.
