«The Fosters» is an American family drama television series created by Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg.
Let’s find out more about the series!
- The Fosters is an American family drama TV series.
- It was created by Peter Paige and Bradley Bredeweg.
- It premiered in the United States on June 3, 2013 on the ABC Family (later Freeform) television network.
- It was concluded on June 6, 2018.
- It followed the lives of the Adams-Foster family led by a lesbian couple, Stef Foster, a police officer, and Lena Adams, a school vice principal, who raise one biological son and four adopted teenagers in San Diego, California.
- The first season received generally favorable reviews and particular acclaim for its portrayal of LGBT themes.
- It also earned two GLAAD Media Awards and one Teen Choice Award.
- On January 3, 2018, Freeform announced that The Fosters would end after five seasons.
- It concluded with a three-episode finale, which also acted as an introduction to Good Trouble, the spin-off series starring Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez.
- The Fosters was originally conceived by openly gay creators Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige who wanted to write a drama that reflected the “modern American family”.
- After originally considering a story about two gay fathers, the pair decided the subject of two men raising a family had already been done on television and began to instead consider a story about two women.
- When asked about the concept of two lesbian mothers raising a blended family, Bredeweg stated, “We realized that there was a kind of a vacuum when it came to stories about women raising families. So we set off in that direction. Many of our own friends are moms raising biological kids. Some of them have fostered and adopted. Suddenly, we realized that we had a story here that hadn’t been told on television before.”
- Additionally, certain elements of the series which deal with the foster care system are said to have been inspired by a troubled childhood friend of Bredeweg, who struggled in the foster system before eventually being adopted in her senior year of high school.
- David Lambert, who plays piano prodigy Brandon Foster, was cast for the role without confirming if he even can play the piano. It turned out he is actually a good pianist.
- When Sherri Saum was pregnant with her twins, she thought about naming them Jesus and Mariana.
- She later then found out they were both boys.
- Hayden Byerly (Jude Adams-Foster) and Gavin Macintosh (Connor Stevens) were once best friends in real life.
- Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez are best friends in real life.
- Callie and Jesus barely share any dialogue in most episodes.
- Noah Centineo took over the role of Jesus after Jake T. Austin’s departure from the series in Season 3.
- Austin explained on Twitter a few years later that the reason for his departure was that he was asked to return only for 3 episodes in season 3.
- On January 3, 2018, Freeform announced that The Fosters was ending after five seasons. The series is set to conclude with a three-episode finale event to air summer 2018. The finale will also act as an introduction to a spinoff-series starring Cierra Ramirez and Maia Mitchell.
- The show will start with a thirteen-episode first season and will be set a few years in the future and follow “Callie and Mariana, as they embark on the next phase of their young adult lives.
- In an interview on The Fosters’ set, Cierra Ramirez stated that her most prized possession was a blanket that she had had since she was a little girl that she called her “night night.”
- In S01E09, while Mariana and Jesus are going through boxes of items from when they were younger, Jesus pulls out a blanket that Mariana states is her “night night.”
- “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” ended the same night “The Fosters” premiered. Both episodes starred Cierra Ramirez.
- Maia Mitchell (Callie Adams-Foster), Jordan Rodrigues (Mat Tan), and Louis Hunter (Nick Stratos) are all Australian, but unlike Mitchell and Rodrigues, Hunter does not have a strong Australian accent.
- Sherri Saum (Lena Adams Foster) was pregnant in real life with twin boys around the same time that her character was pregnant on the show.
- However, the writers have stated that they did not write in the pregnancy due to Saum’s real-life condition and that they had planned for that storyline previously.
- Maia Mitchell, who plays Callie, is Australian. However, she uses an American accent for her character Callie’s voice.

However, transgender stories would be explored in a different area of the show, and instead, Jude’s character would explore his sexuality and sexual orientation once he came out as gay in season 2.
- Bailee Madison (Sophia) and Maia Mitchell (Callie) are often mistaken as sister in real life. However Maia is Australian and Bailee is American.
