Let’s find out more about the romantic movie!
- One Day is a 2011 romantic drama film.
- It was directed by Lone Scherfig from a screenplay by David Nicholls.
- The screenplay was based on Nicholls’ 2009 novel of the same name.
- It stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, with Patricia Clarkson, Ken Stott and Romola Garai in supporting roles.
- It was released in the United States on 19 August 2011 by Focus Features and in the United Kingdom on 24 August 2011 by Universal Pictures.
- The film is a co-production between Random House Films and Focus Features.
- Film4 Productions is co-financing.
- Actress Anne Hathaway said she was clandestinely given the script as the film was set in the United Kingdom.
- The director was not looking for any American actresses for the part.
- Hathaway flew to London for a meeting with Scherfig to explain why she should get the part.
- Anne Hathaway later said it was “the worst meeting of my life… I was just inarticulate”, but on leaving Hathaway wrote out a list of songs for Scherfig to listen to, saying, “I clearly didn’t communicate to you what I needed to today. But I think these songs can do it for me.” Scherfig did listen to them, which led to Hathaway getting the part.
- Principal photography commenced in July 2010.
- Filming took place on location in Scotland, England and France.
- The production filmed in Edinburgh, the city where Dexter and Emma first meet, in August 2010.
- Various landmark locations, including Arthur’s Seat, were used.
- Production then moved to London. Parliament Hill Lido in north London was used for scenes in which Emma, of varying ages, swims.
- Filming took place inside a house in Granville Road in Stroud Green for scenes involving Jim Sturgess and Romola Garai.
- Scenes in the shop and cafe were filmed at Leila’s shop and cafe on Arnold Circus, close to Brick Lane in the East End.
- UK railway Station filming took place at Ridgmont Station on the Bedford to Bletchley Marston Vale Line.
- Filming in France took place in Dinan and Dinard, near Saint-Malo, in Brittany.
- A seaside club was turned into the Café Paradis, designed to ape Greek themes.
- Anne Hathaway picked Jim Sturgess for the role of Dexter Mayhew.
- The scene where Dex and Emma go skinny-dipping is the only scene in the film where Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess were not wearing wigs.
- There were some conversations about casting an American actress to play Dexter’s English mother, but director Lone Scherfig really liked the sense of experience, worldliness and flirtatiousness that Patricia Clarkson brought to the part.
- On-location in Scotland, Anne Hathaway exposed her bottom to Jim Sturgess to set the mood for filming the skinny dipping scene. Though doing it in such a position as to avoid being filmed by the crew, she did not anticipate the presence of several cell-phone-wielding residents of the residential complex behind her. Surprisingly, as of August 2011, this footage had not been posted on the Internet, and Hathaway says she is grateful that the residents had the “class” to refrain from doing so.
- In the scene where Emma and Dexter lie together on the bed in the French hotel after having skinny-dipped, Emma can be seen wearing the same T-shirt, with a “Nuclear Disarmament Now” writing on it that she wore on the graduation night, when she slept together with Dexter four years before their French trip.
- It was actually raining for the filming of the scene where Dex and Emma are vacationing on a French beach. The actors performed under a tarpaulin in their swimsuits.
- Dexter’s father mentions Silent Witness (1996) is coming up on the television. Ken Stott, who plays Dexter’s father, appeared in Silent Witness (1996).
- The screenplay for this film was featured in the 2010 Blacklist, a list of the “most liked” unmade scripts of the year.
- Dexter’s 1990s television talk show is loosely based on the real life talk show The Word with Mark Lamarr. Like Dexter, Mark Lamarr would engage in awkward interviews with popular rap artists.
- Romola Garai filmed her scenes during the breaks she had in the shooting of The Crimson Petal and the White (2011).
- This was the second time Anne Hathaway played a character by the name of “Emma.” The first time was in Bride Wars (2009), alongside Kate Hudson. Coincidentally, “Emma” is a teacher in both movies.
- In Patricia Clarkson’s final scene, the lighting of her close-ups gradually gets brighter and brighter, to signify the character’s imminent death.
- Phoebe Fox’s debut.
- Heida Reed’s debut
- In November 2021, it was announced that Netflix will be adapting the novel and film into a television series.
- The writing team for the series is headed by Nicole Taylor, working with Anna Jordan, Vinay Patel and Bijan Sheibani and will be produced by Drama Republic, Universal International Studios and Focus Features.
- Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall are set to star as lead roles.
- On Rotten Tomatoes the film has a 36% approval rating based on 145 reviews, with an average rating of 5.1/10. The site’s consensus states: “Despite some fresh narrative twists, One Day lacks the emotion, depth, or insight of its bestselling source material”.
- On Metacritic, it has a score of 48% based on reviews from 41 critics, indicating “mixed or average reviews”.
