Glow Trivia | 40 facts about the Netflix original series

Glow was one of the most successful original series that Netflix has ever released. Despite that fact, it was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

  1. GLOW is an American comedy-drama television series streaming on Netflix.
  2. It was created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch for Netflix.
  3. The series revolves around a fictionalization of the characters and gimmicks of the 1980s syndicated women’s professional wrestling circuit Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (or GLOW) founded by David McLane.
  4. The first season consists of 10 episodes and was released on June 23, 2017.
  5. On August 10, 2017, Netflix renewed the series for a second season of 10 episodes, which was released on June 29, 2018.
  6. The series was renewed on August 20, 2018, for a third season, which was released on August 9, 2019.
  7. On September 20, 2019, the series was renewed for a fourth and final season.
  8. However, in October 2020, that decision was reversed by Netflix, and the final season was canceled.
  9. The reason why the final season was cancelled was due to the COVID-19 pandemic that caused a production shutdown.
  10. Season four of the show was in production when they had to shut down due to the pandemic. They had already filmed one whole episode and half of another when Netflix announced they had decided to cancelled the series.
  11. Kia Stevens, who plays Tamee/Welfare Queen in the series, is the only female cast member who is actually a professional wrestler.
  12. Stevens has been a champion all over the world wrestling under the name Awesome Kong (sometimes Amazing Kong). She also briefly wrestled in WWE as Kharma.
  13. The wrestler who trained the actresses for this series, Chavo Guerrero Jr. is the nephew of Armando Guerrero, a.k.a. Mando, the trainer for the wrestlers in the original 1980s series.
  14. Ursula Hayden is the owner of GLOW – Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. She was on the original GLOW in the 1980s as Babe, the Farmer’s Daughter and she bought the company in 2001. She is also a story consultant on GLOW Netflix.
  15. Brooke Hogan, daughter of legendary 80s and 90s wrestling star Hulk Hogan, makes a cameo in the show as the broker who rents out the first major wrestling venue for GLOW.
  16. Carlos Colón Jr, who plays one of the brothers of GLOW member “Machu Picchu,” is a professional wrestler and is the son of famed Puerto Rican wrestler Carlos Colón, Sr.
  17. Arthie’s in-ring persona ‘Beirut the Mad Bomber’ is based on original GLOW wrestler Palestina.
  18. Debbie’s in-ring persona ‘Liberty Belle’ is based on original GLOW wrestlers Americana and Scarlet and Tara the Southern Belles.
  19. Sam Sylvia is loosely based on Matt Cimber, the original GLOW director.
  20. Rhonda’s in-ring persona ‘Britannica’ is loosely based on original GLOW wrestlers Zelda the Brain and Godiva.
  21. Cherry’s season 2 in-ring persona ‘Black Magic’ is loosely based on original GLOW wrestler Big Bad Mama.
  22. The idea for the series came when Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, who at the time were looking to make a new female-centric show, came across the 2012 documentary GLOW: The Story of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.
  23. Before this, neither woman had heard of the GLOW wrestling promotion, and they became intrigued by the premise of producing a fictionalised version of it.
  24. Both women found the story line intriguing as a way of exploring the aftermath of the 1970s Woman’s Liberation Movement.
  25. The ladies train at “Chavo’s Boxing Gym,” named after Chavo Guerrero Jr,. trainer and consultant for the series.
  26. Former World Wrestling entertainer and current global force Wrestler Brodus Clay (Tyrus in Global force wrestling) makes a cameo appearance as Machu Pichu’s brother.
  27. Sebastian Howard is loosely based on David McLane, the founder of the original GLOW.
  28. Alison Brie revealed in a Playboy interview that there are huge groups of fans who have had a fixation with her boobs during her career, starting with the show Community, and that many of them have posted online that they wished she would do nude scenes on screen so they could finally see her boobs.
  29. But ironically, because of all the fitness training she did for GLOW, by the time she was ready to film her first nude scene, she was the most muscular she’s ever been so her boobs are the smallest they’ve ever been.
  30. Former WWE stars Brodus Clay, Carlito, John Morrison and the daughter of Hulk Hogan, Brooke, all make cameos in the first season of the show.
  31. Chavo Guerrero Jr., of the famous Guerrero wrestling family, served as a consultant on the series and helped train the actresses. His uncle Mando Guerrero had served in the same role for the original series.
  32. Britt Baron was a fan of Kate Nash’s (Rhonda) music while growing up. She commented on her Twitter page “Now I get to sit on her shoulders and choke her out. Dreams I didn’t even know I had coming true”. Baron and Nash have become close friends during filming.
  33. Former WWE superstar Alex Riley and current Ring of Honor wrestler Christopher Daniels makes an appearance as wrestlers that the ladies go watch.
  34. When the girls go to the wrestling event, professional wrestlers Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian make an appearance wrestling each other.
  35. They are currently signed with Ring of Honor (ROH) as a tag-team called The Addiction.
  36. Also interesting to note, the building they are wrestling in is the American Legion Post #308 in Reseda, CA which is the same building that Pro Wrestling Guerrila (PWG) holds events in.
  37. Betty Gilpin was nominated for the 2018 Emmy Award in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category for her role as Debbie Eagan in GLOW (2017).
  38. The series was inspired by the 1986 GLOW: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.
  39. When asked what she does as an actor to get comfortable with working nude, Betty Gilpin said nudity doesn’t bother her at all and it amazes her that all actors don’t feel the same way
  40. Former WWE superstar John Morrison, known as the Mayor of Slamtown and Johnny Mundo, among others, appears in the pilot episode.
