Veganism Trivia: 15 facts about the Vegan Lifestyle!

Veganism is both the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, and an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals.[b] A follower of either the diet or the philosophy is known as a vegan. Distinctions are sometimes made between several categories of veganism. Dietary vegans (or strict vegetarians) refrain from consuming animal products, not only meat but also eggs, dairy products and other animal-derived substances.

1. Several studies show that a plant-based diet increases the body’s metabolism, causing the body to burn calories up to 16% faster than the body would on a meat-based diet for at least the first 3 hours after meals.

2. Veganism is a way of life that alters diet, clothing, and other decisions with the goal of ending exploitation of animals.

3. Studies show that a vegetarian diet could feed more people than a meat-based diet. For example, only around 20% of the corn grown in the United States is eaten by people, with about 80% of the corn eaten by livestock. Additionally, approximately 95% of the oats grown in the U.S are eaten by livestock. Studies show that the number of people who could be fed by the grain and soybeans that are currently fed to U.S. livestock is approximate 1,300,000,000.

4. Vegan foods are free of all animal products such as meat, eggs, fish, and dairy.

5. “Ethical vegans” also avoid the use of animal products like skin (leather or fur), feathers, and other things that cause animal suffering during production.

6. Research reveals that if a man avoids red meats, it improves the sex appeal of his body odor.

7. The number of animals killed for meat every hour in the U.S. is 500,000.

8. Approximately 5% of the US is vegetarian (close to 16 million people), and about half of those are vegan — meaning about 7.5 million Americans abstain from all animal products.

9. Vegan living often reduces the intake of saturated fat, animal hormones, and cholesterol while increasing the intake of fresh fruits and veggies. That has the potential to reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.

10. World Vegan Day is annually celebrated on the 1st of November.

11. Many Vegans suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency.

12. Back in the 1940s, it was a lifestyle in search of a name. “Dairyban” did not quite cut it, neither did “vitan” or “benevore”. In the end, six early adherents, including Donald Watson, the British animal rights campaigner, settled on “vegan” to describe their philosophy — that animals should not be exploited for food or any other purpose — and founded the Vegan Society.

13. Veganism is protected as a human right under Article 9 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights.

14. The Vegan Society runs a mentoring scheme to help people who would like to become vegan called the Vegan Pledge. The number of Pledgers has doubled in the last year, with over 1000 people taking the Pledge each month.

15. Many people who live on the vegan diet without any supplements are prone to develop anemia.
