According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the average Greek worker toils away for 2,017 hours per year, the highest in Europe. Hungary and Poland are next.Germans work 1,408 hours a year on average, which is 40% less than the average Greek, according to the same organisation.
“The Greek labour market is composed of a large number of people who are self-employed, meaning farmers and – on the other hand – shop-keepers who are working long hours”, Pascal Marianna, a labour markets statistician at the OECD says.
