The Walking Dead trivia: 33 horrifying facts about the series!

The Walking Dead is an American horror drama television series developed by Frank Darabont, based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. Andrew Lincoln plays the show’s lead character, sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes, who awakens from a coma discovering a world overrun by zombies, commonly referred to as “walkers”.

1. The Walking Dead takes place after the onset of a worldwide zombie apocalypse.

2. The zombies, colloquially referred to as “walkers”, shamble towards living humans and other creatures to eat them, humans that they bite or scratch become infected and slowly turn into walkers as well.

3. It is revealed early in the series that all living humans carry this pathogen, so that if they die from any other cause, they will also turn into walkers.

4. The only way to permanently kill a walker is to damage its brain or otherwise destroying the body such as by setting it aflame.

5. The series centers on sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes who wakes up from a coma to discover this apocalypse.

6. He becomes the leader of a group of survivors from the Atlanta, Georgia region as they attempt to sustain themselves and protect themselves not only attacks from walkers but from other groups of survivors that are willing to assure their longevity by any means necessary.

7. Much of the series takes place within the Atlanta metro area and surrounding countryside. Later, the setting transitions to other parts of the country including Alexandria, Virginia.

8. The Walking Dead premiered in the United States on October 31, 2010, exclusively shown on cable television channel AMC and internationally on Fox International Channels.

9. As a result of very favorable Nielsen ratings that rank the show unprecedentedly high for a cable series, AMC has renewed the series each year.

10. Beginning with its third season, The Walking Dead attracts the most 18- to 49-year-old viewers of any cable or broadcast television series.

11. It is presently airing its seventh season, starting on October 23, 2016,[12][13] and has been renewed for an eighth season to air in late 2017.

12. The series has been well received by critics and nominated for several awards, including the Writers Guild of America Award for Television: New Series and the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama.

13. An AMC companion series, Fear the Walking Dead, debuted on August 23, 2015.

15. The actress who plays Tara is the real-life sister of Francis from Malcom in the Middle.

21. The mouse Lizzie tries to feed the walker in Season 4 is mostly made of gelatin and grape jelly.

22. No one knows exactly how the virus started or how it is contracted. One theory is that it is not actually contagious, but everyone already has it. When a person dies, they will reanimate as a ‘walker’, regardless of how they were killed.

23. From season to season, the opening titles, and the walkers, “decompose” more and more to show elapsed time.

24. Daryl isn’t in the comic at all.

25. Merle isn’t either.

26. Sasha also doesn’t exist in the comic world.

27. The bag of drugs Daryl finds has blue meth in it, a nod to Breaking Bad.

28. The car Glen uses in the first season is also a nod to Breaking Bad.

29. During lunch breaks, the zombie cast would eat together while the human cast ate together.

30. During an interview, Robert Kirkman claimed Norman Reedus (Daryl) originally auditioned for the part of Merle Dixon. He was rejected, but his audition so intrigued the show-runners that they created the part of Daryl just for him.

31. When they filmed the scene where they introduced Michonne, actress Danai Gurira hadn’t been cast yet, so that’s not her.

32. In the first four seasons of the show, the characters did not say the word “zombie” once.

33. The missing arms on Michonne’s walkers were made with “green screen gloves.”
