Siblings Day is an annual celebration on April 10, on some parts of the United States. It’s the celebration of having a brother or sister!

  1. Siblings Day is a holiday recognized annually in some parts of the United States on April 10
  2. In honoring the relationships of siblings
  3. It is most commonly called National Siblings Day
  4. Unlike Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, it is not federally recognized
  5. Though the Siblings Day Foundation is working to change this
  6. The commemorative day has been recognized by three US Presidents
  7. They are Clinton in 2000, Bush in 2008 and Obama in 2016
  8. Since 1998, the governors of 49 states have officially issued proclamations to recognize Siblings Day in their state
  9. From its American beginnings the observation has become international
  10. Spreading as far as the United Kingdom, Australia, India, Japan, New Zealand, The Philippines, Nigeria, Sweden, Canada and more
  11. The Hindu holiday of Raksha Bandhan also celebrates the bond of brothers and sisters
  12. But it is unrelated to the American holiday
  13. The US holiday was originally conceived by Claudia Evart to honor the memory of her brother and sister who loved each other
  14. Both of whom died at early ages
  15. The Siblings Day Foundation was incorporated in 1997
  16. And achieved non-profit status in 1999
  17. Carolyn Maloney officially saluted the holiday
  18. She introduced it into the official Congressional Record of the United States Congress on April 10, 1997
  19. Then, she was the U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district
  20. And in subsequent years 2001, 2005 and 2008
  21. In the United States, approximately 80% of people have siblings
  22. The holiday is intended to be a celebration of the relationship of brothers and sisters
  23. Examples of commemoration during this observance include giving your sibling a gift
  24. Including a surprise gift
  25. A giftcard
  26. And taking one out for dinner
  27. Nonmaterial examples of observances during this day includes giving hugs to your sibling or siblings
  28. Enjoying time with them
  29. And honoring their presence in your life
