Sherlock is a British-American crime drama television series based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, it stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson.

1. Sherlock depicts “consulting detective” Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) solving various mysteries in modern-day London.
2. Holmes is assisted by his flatmate and friend, Dr John Watson (Martin Freeman), who has returned from military service in Afghanistan with the Royal Army Medical Corps.
3. Although Metropolitan Police Service Detective Inspector Greg Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and others are at first suspicious of Holmes, over time his exceptional intellect and bold powers of observation persuade them of his value.
4. In part through Watson’s blog documenting their adventures, Holmes becomes a reluctant celebrity with the press reporting on his cases and eccentric personal life. Both ordinary people and the British government ask for his help.
5. Although the series depicts a variety of crimes and perpetrators, Holmes’ conflict with archnemesis Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott) is a recurring feature.
6. Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey), a pathologist at St. Bart’s Hospital, occasionally assists Holmes in his cases.
7. Other recurring roles include Una Stubbs as Mrs Hudson, Holmes and Watson’s landlady, and series co-creator Mark Gatiss as Holmes’ elder brother Mycroft.
8. Ten episodes have been produced, with three-part series airing in 2010, 2012 and 2014, and a special episode airing on 1 January 2016.
9. A fourth series has been commissioned, which began filming in April 2016 for an intended 2017 release.
10. The series is set in the present day, while the one-off special partly features a Victorian period fantasy resembling the original Holmes stories.
11. Sherlock is a co-production between the BBC and WGBH Boston for its Masterpiece anthology series on PBS, with Sue Vertue and Elaine Cameron of Hartswood Films serving as producers.
12. The series is primarily filmed in Cardiff, Wales, with North Gower Street in London used for exterior shots of Holmes and Watson’s 221B Baker Street residence.
13. Critical reception has been highly positive, with many reviews praising the quality of the writing, performances, and direction.
14. Sherlock has been nominated for numerous awards including: BAFTAs, Emmys, and a Golden Globe, winning several awards across a variety of categories.
15. The show won in three categories at the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or a Dramatic Special for Moffat, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for Cumberbatch, and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for Freeman.
16. Two years later, it won Outstanding Television Movie. In addition, the show was also honoured with a Peabody Award in 2011.
17. The third series has become the UK’s most watched drama series since 2001.[5] Sherlock has been sold to 180 territories.
18. All of the series have been released on DVD and Blu-ray, alongside tie-in editions of selected original Conan Doyle stories and original soundtrack composed by David Arnold and Michael Price.

20. It all began with a speech. In 2006, well-known Holmes enthusiast Mark Gatiss was asked to address the Sherlock Holmes Society’s annual dinner at the Houses of Parliament. Gatiss, who brought along Steven Moffat as his guest, told the audience about a meeting at the BBC to discuss the possibility of resurrecting Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation for a Christmas special.
21. Not everybody appreciated Irene Adler’s nudity. The BBC reportedly received over 100 complaints about actress Lara Pulver’s portrayal of Holmes’s female sparring partner as an upmarket dominatrix who used pre-watershed seminudity to bewitch the detective in A Scandal in Belgravia.
22. But some Sherlock purists objected on different grounds. Irene Adler as conceived by Conan Doyle in A Scandal in Bohemia, it was argued in blog after blog, was a formidable woman of honour, who would never allow herself to become a pawn of Moriarty, or to fall for Holmes after showing him her breasts.
23. Steven Moffat disagreed with the feminists. “In the original,” he told The Guardian, “Irene Adler’s victory over Sherlock Holmes was to move house and run away with her husband. That’s not a feminist victory.”
24. All violins played by Sherlock (three different ones in three seasons) are borrowed from Cardiff Violins and in season three it was a £1200 Con Fuoco. Rather wonderfully, after the BBC had returned the Con Fuoco, Cardiff Violins received this letter.
25. Baker Street, the original location of Arthur Conan Doyle’s books, is said to now have too much Sherlock-related signage to be used as a filming location for the show. The BBC actually shot exteriors 1 mile east of there, at 187 North Gower Street.
26. The real life Speedy’s Cafe was called “Mrs Hudson’s Snax & Sandwiches” in the pilot episode, before that name was dropped.
27. Benedict Cumberbatch’s parents play Sherlock Holmes’s parents. Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton (real name Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch) appeared in the first episode of series three, having tea at Sherlock’s flat.
28. The Sherlock finale generated a colossal 377,182 tweets, the highest volume of tweets for a single episode of a drama series in the UK. The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary adventure received more tweets but is counted as a special.
29. Sherlock has produced just 10 episodes in nearly eight years, a far cry from the 180-odd episodes a network series would have amassed in that time.
30. But the erratic shooting schedule that sometimes frustrates fans might eventually work to the audience’s benefit.
31. Because the series doesn’t shoot continuously, Moffat sees no reason the production can’t keep resuming indefinitely. “It’s an occasional treat when you get three movies,” he said in mid-2016. “That’s why I think it’s unlikely that we’ve completely finished it. There would be nothing strange in stopping for a while. It could go on forever, coming back now and again.”
