  2. He was born on October 23, 1970.
  3. He was born to a Japanese-American family in Los Angeles, California.
  4. Imahara was a graduate of the University of Southern California, with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering.
  5. For a time, he seriously considered switching majors, with the intention of becoming a screenwriter.
  6. Then he decided to stay on the engineering track after assisting Tomlinson Holman, a professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts.
  7. Grant Imahara was an American electrical engineer, roboticist, and television host.
  8. He was best known for his work on the television series MythBusters.
  9. On MythBusters, he designed and built numerous robots and specialized in operating computers and electronics to test myths.
  10. Prior to his television career, Imahara worked at Lucasfilm in the THX division as an engineer and in the Industrial Light and Magic division in visual effects.
  11. He also appeared on the television show BattleBots.
  12. In BattleBots he designed and competed with his robot Deadblow.
  13. He later returned as a judge.
  14. Imahara starred in the 2016 Netflix series White Rabbit Project alongside his MythBusters co-stars Kari Byron and Tory Belleci.
  15. Grant Imahara was also a passionate live-action role-playing gamer.
  16. He was credited for his work in updating the aging R2-D2 robots for the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
  17. As an official Artoo Technician, he made a cameo appearance in the mockumentary R2-D2: Beneath the Dome.
  18. Imahara joined MythBusters on the invitation of friend and occasional employer Jamie Hyneman.
  19. Jamie Hyneman was a former ILM colleague Linda Wolkovitch, who was an associate producer of MythBusters.
  20. He joined as the third member of the Build Team alongside Kari Byron and Tory Belleci.
  21. He replaced former MythBusters welder Scottie Chapman.
  22. His colleagues often jokingly referred to him as the “geek” of the Build Team.
  23. He often made the robots that are needed for the show and otherwise specializes in operating the computers and electronics for the myths.
  24. Imahara, along with Byron and Belleci, left the show after the 2014 season.
  25. They reunited for the 2016 White Rabbit Project, which was a Netflix Original Series.
  26. During that project, the team investigates topics such as jailbreaks, superpower technology, heists, and bizarre World War II weapons, evaluated against a defined set of criteria, and explored through experiments, builds, and tests.
  27. The complete first season of the series was released on the Netflix streaming service on December 9, 2016, but the series was not renewed.
  28. In December 2016, Imahara became engaged to his long-time girlfriend, costume designer Jennifer Newman.
  29. Imahara died on July 13, 2020, at the age of 49.
  30. The cause of his death was the brain aneurysm.
