- FaceApp is a mobile application for iOS and Android
- It is developed by Russian company Wireless Lab
- Which uses neural network technology to automatically generate highly realistic transformations of faces in photographs
- The app can transform a face to make it smile, look younger, look older, or even change gender
- FaceApp was launched on iOS in January 2017
- And on Android in February 2017
- A “hot” transformation was previously available in FaceApp
- But following criticism and accusations of “racism” that it lightened the skin color of black people and made them look more European
- It was briefly renamed “spark” and then removed
- In response to the controversy, Yaroslav Goncharov, the founder and chief executive of Wireless Lab, said “We are deeply sorry for this unquestionably serious issue. It is an unfortunate side-effect of the underlying neural network caused by the training set bias, not intended behaviour”
- He added that a “complete fix” was being worked on
- On August 9, 2017, FaceApp once again faced criticism when it featured “ethnicity filters” depicting “White”, “Black”, “Asian”, and “Indian”
- Yaroslav Goncharov immediately removed the filters from the app
- The gender change transformations of FaceApp have attracted particular interest from the LGBT and transgender communities
- Due to their ability to realistically simulate the appearance of a person as the opposite gender
