Amongst every teacher, every child and every grown up that still thinks some stuff is funny, the name Uranus doesn’t really look to good for a planet. Especially since the original pronunciation sounds like “Your Anus” and even the alternative one like “Urine Us”. So why was it stuck with a name that we should avoid using?
Although the planet was discovered by William Herschel, who named the planet “The Georgium Sidis”, translating to “The Georgian Star”. This was the case because the king of england was king George III. Since people living outside England didn’t quite like this annotation, and since it wasn’t a star or an asteroid there was no law saying that Herschel would get to name it, there was a debate for a name. George was also suggested but this would be disrespectful to the King. Johann Bode suggested the name Uranus after the Greek name for “god of the sky”.
Nobody really knows if Bode really knew how it would be pronounced in english, if he did, it is a very long lasting joke.
