Compared to the mass of the solar system, you can say that the mass of the earth is insignificant and get away with it. It really is. Everything you have ever travelled upon, every image of every forest, mountain and ocean you have ever seen accounts for an absolutely insignificant amount of mass, not only compared to the universe, but our solar system as well.
Let’s see what do we mean by that. I mean, earth has like A LOT of mass right? Well, technically, it depends on what you mean a lot. The earth itself weighs 5.9 sextillion metric tons, or 5.9 million billion billion kilograms. It is so heavy that hearing this number our spines begin to tingle. How can that be nothing?
This is nothing because it has to be compared to significantly larger bodies. Neptune, for example is 17 times heavier, Saturn is 92 times heavier, Jupiter is 317 times heavier and let us not forget our precious sun: It is 332,000 times heavier than earth, accounting for 99.9% of the solar system’s mass. Jupiter is the other 0.1%. If we do not round it, earth is accounting for 0.0003% of the earths mass. Even if we weren’t here, things would not be any different for our solar system!
