The Lobster is a 2015 internationally co-produced absurdist dystopian black comedy film directed, co-written, and co-produced by Yorgos Lanthimos. Let’s see some amazing facts and trivia about it!

1.Principal photography began on 24 March 2014, and concluded on 9 May 2014.

2. Filming took place in Dublin, Ireland, which represents “The City” in the film, and also at locations in and around County Kerry, including Sneem, Dromore Woods and Kenmare

3. In May 2014, it was announced that Sony Pictures acquired the distribution rights for Australia, New Zealand, German-speaking Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America.

4. A film still featuring Farrell, Whishaw, and Reilly was released around the same time.

5. In May 2015, Alchemy acquired United States distribution rights; however, due to the company’s financial struggles at the time, A24 acquired the US rights instead.

6. Originally scheduled for an 11 March 2016 release, it was re-scheduled to 13 May 2016

7. The Lobster received acclaim from film critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a rating of 89% based on reviews from 201 critics, with an average score of 7.6/10.

8. The site’s critical consensus reads, “As strange as it is thrillingly ambitious, The Lobster is definitely an acquired taste – but for viewers with the fortitude to crack through Yorgos Lanthimos’ offbeat sensibilities, it should prove a savory cinematic treat.”

9. At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted average score out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film received an average score of 82, based on 44 reviews, indicating “universal acclaim”.

10. Colin Farrell gained 40 pounds for his role.

11. The production worked almost entirely with natural light and without make-up. Lighting was only used for some night scenes.

12. The song that David and the Short-sighted woman synchronize their CD players with and dance to in the woods, is “Where The Wild Roses Grow” by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds featuring Kylie Minogue.

13. The Eccles Hotel in Glengarriff, County Cork is used for many of the interior shots of the hotel. Many exterior shots were taken in Parknasilla.

14. The hotel, where a large portion of the movie takes place, is decorated almost entirely with dutch flower still life from the 1600’s.

15. Jason Clarke was cast in the lead role but he dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

16. Three members of the cast have spent a lot of time with James Bond. Lea Seydoux was the main love interest in “Spectre.” Ben Whishaw played Q in”Skyfall” and “Spectre”. And Rachel Weisz is married to Daniel Craig.

17. Altough many consider this as Yorgos Lanthimos’ first English spoken film, the truth is that the director’s first is Necktie, a short film featured in Venezia 70: Future Reloaded

18. Rachel Weisz doesn’t appear on screen until 58 minutes into the movie.

19. The knife which is used by the Short Sighted Woman in the scene where she tried to protect herself in the woods is an Opinel, a traditional french knife.
