  2. It was created by René Echevarria and Travis Beacham.
  3. The TV show is based on Beacham’s unproduced film spec script, A Killing on Carnival Row.
  4. The series stars Orlando Bloom, Cara Delevingne, Simon McBurney, Tamzin Merchant, David Gyasi, Andrew Gower, Karla Crome, Arty Froushan, Indira Varma, and Jared Harris.
  5. In the show, mythological beings must survive as oppressed refugees in human society as a detective works to solve murders.
  6. Carnival Row premiered on Amazon Prime Video on August 30, 2019.
  7. In July 2019, Amazon renewed Carnival Row for a second season.
  8. The first episode of the second season was written by Erik Oleson and Travis Beacham & Marc Guggenheim with the teleplay by Erik Oleson.
  9. The second through fifth episodes are written by Sarah Byrd, Wesley Strick, Dylan Gallagher & Mateja Božičević and Tania Lotia respectively.
  10. Amazon ordered three scripts with the expectation that if the series went into production del Toro would direct the first episode.
  11. On June 6, 2016, the production was given a pilot order with the previously announced creative team still set to be involved.
  12. On May 10, 2017, the production was given a series order with Beacham and Echeverria still executive producing, and with Echeverria expected to act as showrunner. Filmmaker Paul McGuigan was set to direct the series.
  13. By this point, del Toro had stepped away from the project, as his feature film schedule did not permit him to stay on as an executive producer as the project moved forward.
  14. On November 10, 2017, filmmaker Jon Amiel replaced McGuigan as director.
  15. In July 2019, Amazon renewed the series for a second season.
  16. The series spent almost five months in pre-production before filming began.
  17. The series was shot entirely in the Czech Republic throughout 108 shooting days.
  18. Principal photography began in October 2017.
  19. Much of the work was done at the Barrandov Studios in Prague, while locations included the city of Liberec, the chateaux in Frýdlant and Krnsko, and at the Prachov Rocks (Prachovské skály) area.
  20. Filming for the first season concluded on March 14, 2018.
  21. Production on the second season commenced in November 2019, but was halted in March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. As of the first week of May, preparations for resumption of production were underway. However, by June 2020, Amazon had yet to resume production on the series.
  22. Upon production halting due to the pandemic, the production team were reportedly three weeks away from concluding filming for the season. Filming for the second season continued in August 2020 in the Czech Republic.
  23. Production for the second season again resumed in May 2021 in the Czech Republic to film the remaining scenes which involve Orlando Bloom, who was not available in 2020 due to the birth of his child.
  24. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in February 2021, Tamzin Merchant revealed that only five out of eight episodes were wrapped up.

In an interview with Mailonline, Orlando Bloom, who is 42, admitted that it was awkward filming the racy nude sex scenes, which leave little to the imagination, with his 27-year-old co-star Cara Delevingne. Orlando said “I don’t think it’s intentionally gratuitous, it leads into the fantasy genre of the show, it’s good.” Then he admitted “It’s quite punchy. It’s always a little awkward, honestly, there’s a lot of people standing around watching you pretending to have sex.”
  28. This was originally the subject of a fierce bidding war, ultimately won by Legendary Studios. During the early stages of pre-production, Guillermo del Toro, Neil Jordan and Tarsem Singh were being courted to direct, but in the end, the decision was made to develop it as a TV project.
  29. There are several name references to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Philostrate and Flute come directly from minor characters in the play. The fauns’ derogatory title, Puck, is another name for the trickster fairy, Robin Goodfellow. In the flashback, the fairies pray to St. Titania, queen of the fairies. Other names are similar to characters in the play. Egreus is Egeus with an added R. Quill is similar to Quince. Several surnames are compound words like the names of some fairies from the play.   30. During an interview with Collider, Cara Delevingne admitted she loved her prosthetic pixie wings so much that she took several pictures of herself naked with them.
