Another Round Trivia | 30 facts about the Danish film

“Another Round” is a popular Danish movie, that was awarded with the Oscar for the best international movie.

Let’s find out more about the movie!

  1. Another Round is a 2020 black comedy-drama film.
  2. Its original title is Druk.
  3. It is Danish and it means binge drinking.
  4. The film was directed by Thomas Vinterberg.
  5. The screenplay was written by Vinterberg and Tobias Lindholm.
  6. It’s an international co-production between Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
  7. In the film stars Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang, and Lars Ranthe.
  8. The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 12 September 2020.
  9. It was released in Denmark on 24 September 2020 by Nordisk Film.
  10. At the 93rd Academy Awards, the film won for Best International Feature Film and was also nominated for Best Director. It also won BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language and European Film Award for Best Film, and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
  11. The film was based on a play Vinterberg had written while working at Burgtheater, Vienna.
  12. Additional inspiration came from Vinterberg’s own daughter, Ida, who had told stories of the drinking culture within the Danish youth.
  13. Ida had originally pressed Vinterberg to adapt the play into a movie, and she was slated to play the daughter of Martin (Mads Mikkelsen).
  14. The story was originally “A celebration of alcohol based on the thesis that world history would have been different without alcohol”.
  15. However, four days into filming, Ida was killed in a car accident. Following the tragedy, the script was reworked to become more life affirming.
  16. Tobias Lindholm served as director in the week following the accident.
  17. The film was dedicated to Ida, and was partially filmed in her classroom with her classmates
  18. At first it was meant to be filmed at Ida’s high school, was a monument to his daughter.
  19. During production, the four main actors and Vinterberg would meet to drink just enough to let go of the embarrassment in front of each other.
  20. They would also watch drunk people on YouTube to better understand how completely inebriated people would act.
  21. Denmark has some of the highest rates of teenage drinking in the world. A World Health Organization report released earlier in 2020 found that Danish 15-year-olds consumed alcohol at nearly double the European average. Recent efforts to raise the minimum age for purchasing alcohol to 18 from 16 have met with resistance, in part because older adults recall their own youthful intoxications so fondly.
  22. Despite COVID restrictions by opening weekend the film had sold 102,366 tickets, including 13,400 tickets in previews, in Denmark
  23. It achieved the biggest opening weekend for a Danish drama in seven years
  24. Total admissions have since reached over 750,000.

  26. Official selection of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  27. The white ship with a yellow chimney in the last scene is named Dannebrog and belongs to the royal Danish family.
  28. The Copenhagen restaurant Lumskebugten, as well as the pubs Alléenberg and Sankt Peder are featured in the movie
  29. In the 2021 year Thomas Vinterberg was the only Oscar (Academy Award) nominee for Director where a cast member from the film was not also Oscar nominated in an acting category.
  30. The ending dance scene was shot over two days with Mads Mikkelsen dancing four or five hours per day.
