- Annette was not conceived as a movie, it was originally intended to be a Sparks album. Sparks had previously written and recorded a narrative musical ‘The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman’. With an extensive cast it proved too difficult to tour so the band wrote Annette. The piece was being readied to release and tour when the Maels met Carax at Cannes after he put a Sparks song on the soundtrack of his film Holy Motors.
- Kristen Stewart was offered the lead role but had to decline because she can’t sing well.
- This marks as the second film where Leos Carax didn’t cast his frequent star of many films Denis Lavant. The other film in which Lavant doesn’t appear was Pola X (1999).
- Acting debut of Belgian singer Angèle (born Angèle Van Laeken), who started as influencer before becoming a famous popsinger in Europe in 2018 with her platinum winning album “Brol”.
- The film was partly filmed in Münster, NRW, Germany – in the building of the LVM insurance on Kolde-Ring 21. According to the film makers the LVM tower looks similar to the building of the L. A. police department.
- In november 2019 some scènes were filmed at the Kunstmuseum in Bonn, Germany.
