Leeks on Elizabeth’ s coronation dress in 1953

Elizabeth’ s dressmaker Norman Hartnell designed leeks on her coronation dress for the  coronation ceremony back in June 2, 1953.

“The leek is an admirable vegetable, full of chivalrous significance and undoubtable life-giving properties, but not really known for its beauty”, said the fashion designer.

Hartnell was  incredibly nervous during the ceremony about the peoples’ judgements, as it was a closely guided secret. However, British people considered the dress exceptional, as well as the queen, who declared it “glorious”, as soon as she saw it.
