Marc Jacobs is an American fashion designer. He is the head designer for his own fashion label, Marc Jacobs, as well as Marc by Marc Jacobs, a diffusion line, with over 200 retail stores in 80 countries.

1.Marc Jacobs was born on the 9th of April, 1963, in New York city.

2.He was born to a non-observant Jewish family.

3.His father, an agent at the William Morris Agency, died when Jacobs was 7 years old.

4.His mother, who remarried three times, was “mentally ill” and “didn’t really take care of her kids”, according to Jacobs.

5.As a teenager, he went to live with his paternal grandmother on the Upper West Side, in an apartment in the Majestic on Central Park West.

6.His grandmother’s death in 1987 was a major loss for the designer, affecting him greatly creatively.

7.At age 15, Marc Jacobs worked as a stockboy at an avant-garde boutique in New York City.

8.He started going to Studio 54 when he was 15 years old. He would bring his books to the nightclub and go to school in the morning.

9.He attended the High School of Art and Design and studied at the Parsons School of Design in New York.

10.During his studies at Parsons in 1984, Jacobs won the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award, Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award, and Design Student of the Year Award.

11.In 1987, Jacobs was the youngest designer to have ever been awarded the fashion industry’s highest tribute, the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Perry Ellis Award for “New Fashion Talent”.

12.In 1986, backed by Onward Kashiyama USA, Inc., Jacobs designed his first collection bearing the Marc Jacobs label.

13.In 1992, the Council of Fashion Designers of America awarded Jacobs with The Women’s Designer of the Year Award. In the same year, he designed a “grunge” collection for Perry Ellis, leading to his dismissal.

14.In the fall of 1993, Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc. launched their own licensing and design company: Marc Jacobs International Company, L.P.

15.In 1994, Jacobs produced his first full collection of menswear.

16.In 1997, Jacobs was appointed Louis Vuitton’s creative director, where he created the company’s first ready-to-wear clothing line.

17.He was the creative director of the French design house Louis Vuitton from 1997 to 2014.

18.Jacobs has collaborated with many popular artists for his Louis Vuitton collections, including Stephen Sprouse, Takashi Murakami and most recently American artist Richard Prince and rapper Kanye West.

18.In the spring of 2001, Jacobs introduced his secondary line, Marc by Marc Jacobs.

19.In 2007 filmmaker Loïc Prigent released a documentary film about Jacobs entitled Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton.

20.In February 2008, Jacobs was accused of plagiarizing a scarf design created in the 1950s by Swedish designer Gösta Olofsson. Jacobs settled the matter by offering monetary compensation to Olofsson’s son.

21.In 2009, Jacobs launched a shirt, sold at his stores, demanding the legalization of gay marriage.

22.In February 2013, Jacobs was named the new creative director for Diet Coke. In honor of the brand’s 30th anniversary, Jacobs will spend one year where he is slated to give the brand a “stylish and light-hearted” makeover.

23.In October 2013, after the Spring – Summer 2014 show, it was revealed that Marc Jacobs will leave Louis Vuitton to focus on his own line

25.On February 26, 2014, it was announced that actress Jessica Lange would be the new face of Marc Jacobs Beauty.

26.Jacobs was on Time magazine’s “2010 Time 100” list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

27.Jacobs has an ongoing project entitled, “Protect The Skin You’re In”, which has celebrities pose nude, with their breasts and frontal area covered, for T-shirts to raise awareness about melanoma and all sales benefit research at the NYU Langone Medical Center.

30.In an interview with British Vogue, he compared his relationship with then LVMH boss, Bernard Arnault, to that of Babe the pig and his reticent but well-meaning owner. “I am that pig and he pats me on the back and says, ‘That’ll do, pig,’ and I just feel this is the highest praise.”

31.He named an ostrich-skin handbag the BB, after fashion blogger BryanBoy.

32.In 2007, he dyed his hair blue during the Takashi Murakami Gala at The Museum of Contemporary Art.
