World Animal Day Trivia: 50 facts you’ve probably never heard of about animals!

It’s hard to distinguish what it is about animals that we love the most, their cute or beautiful looks, their innocence or the emotional reactions that they draw out from us. We’re all familiar (I hope) with that warm fuzzy feeling when encountering an animal! Whatever the case, here are some fun facts about animals to cheer you up! Happy World Animal Day!

1. A 69-ton, 120-foot titanosaur, the fossil of which was found this year in Argentina, is thought to be the largest animal ever to walk the earth.

2. The heaviest animal ever recorded was a blue whale weighing 190 tons.

3. Pigeons in Japan were trained to discriminate between Picasso and Monet paintings in 1995. 

4. Causing a horse, donkey or pony to lose its balance and fall over is illegal in Phoenix, Arizona. 

5. In 2008, a snake in Australia that swallowed four golf balls thinking they were chicken eggs was saved by emergency surgery.

6. Around 10 million times as many sharks are killed by humans as humans killed by sharks.

7. St Francis, the patron saint of animals, was born in 1181 or 1182 and died on the night of October 3, 1226. He was renowned for his love of animals. In many places it is still usual for churches to bless animals on October 4.

9. Millions of trees grow every year thanks to squirrels forgetting where they put their nuts.

10. Female insects of the genus Neotrogla have a penis and can have sex for up to 70 hours.

27. Dogs will sneeze to tell other dogs that they’re playing, so when they’re playing rough it doesn’t turn into a fight.

28. Infant Pygmy Marmosets babble to develop their language skills, similarly to the way human babies babble.

29. Baby dolphins have spines on the sides of their tongue. The spines zip up to make a straw so that they can drink the mother’s milk without getting salt water in it.

30. You can use a blue whale’s wax earplug to work out its life history.

31. Dolphins can stay active for 15 days or more by sleeping with only one half of their brain at a time.

45. Tigers not only have stripes on their fur, they also have them on their skin. No two tigers ever have the same stripes.

46. To escape the grip of a crocodile’s jaw, push your thumb into its eyeball. It will let you go instantly.

47. Elephants can smell water up to 3 miles away. They are also one of the three mammals that undergo menopause, the other two being humpback whales and human females.

48. Koala bears almost exclusively eat only eucalyptus leaves and nothing else.

49. Because beavers’ teeth never stop growing, they must constantly gnaw on objects to keep them at a manageable length. Their teeth would eventually grow into their brain if they didn’t maintain them.

50. You can tell a turtle’s gender by the noise it makes. Males grunt and females hiss.
