  2. They belong to the Equidae family along with horses and donkeys.
  3. Actually, zebras are very similar to horses as they can even breed each other.
  4. Zebras though are wilder and more dangerous than horses.
  5. They live in the continent of Africa.
  6. Their most unique characteristic as animals is their black and white strips.
  7. Every zebra has a unique pattern of black and white stripes.
  8. Some zebras don’t have stripes on their belly and their skin over there is white.
  9. Their “skin” underneath their stripes is black.
  10. Zebras can kill each other by… kicking!
  11. Many times they have also killed lions.
  12. Even though they are aggressive though, they are herbivores which means they don’t eat other animals.
  13. There are 3 kinds of zebras: plains zebra, Grevy’s zebra, and mountain zebra.
  14. Grevy’s zebra is endangered species!
  15. Romans used Grévy’s zebras to pull two-wheeled carts for their circuses.
  16. In Roman Circuses the zebra was usually called a ‘Tiger-Horse’ or a ‘Horse-Tiger’.
  17. Scientists believe that their stripes have 3 roles.
  18. At first, they serve as sunscreen and bug repellent.
  19. A zebra’s stripy coat is thought to disperse more than 70% of incoming heat.
  20. They also act as camouflage.
  21. They also help them recognize each other in order to socialize.
  22. They are not sure about the stripes’ roles though.
  23. The most common species is the plains zebra, which live in eastern and southern Africa.
  24. The Grevy’s zebra can be found in dry, semi-desert areas of Kenya and Ethiopia.
  25. The mountain zebra lives in mountainous and hilly habitats in Namibia, Angola, and South Africa.
  26. Zebras are always on the go trying to find grass to eat and water to drink.
  27. Zebras run in a zig-zag pattern when being chased by a predator.
  28. This is how they make it harder for the predator to catch them.
  29. A group of zebras is called a “zeal”.
  30. A zeal consists of 1 male and the females who follow him.
  31. A mother zebra keeps the “baby zebra” away from the group for 2-3 days until it starts understanding her smell, her voice, and general appearance.
  32. Zebras probably can see color even though the majority of mammals can’t.
  33. They can’t see orange though.
  34. A zebra can run up to 65 km/h.
  35. Zebras make many noises, some of which are the same as horses while others are unique.
  36. Zebras sleep while standing on their feet.
  37. Also, they normally sleep while they feel safe, which means they sleep while being in the “zeal”.
  38. Crocodiles, leopards, hyenas and wild dogs are some of zebra’s natural enemies.
  39. In the wild zebras can live up to 25 years.
  40. It is legal to own a zebra in most of the States of the U.S.A
