Zebras are amazing animals known for their particular colors.
Zebras are the famous stripped animals. Let’s find out more about them and their lives!
- Zebras are mammals.
- They belong to the Equidae family along with horses and donkeys.
- Actually, zebras are very similar to horses as they can even breed each other.
- Zebras though are wilder and more dangerous than horses.
- They live in the continent of Africa.
- Their most unique characteristic as animals is their black and white strips.
- Every zebra has a unique pattern of black and white stripes.
- Some zebras don’t have stripes on their belly and their skin over there is white.
- Their “skin” underneath their stripes is black.
- Zebras can kill each other by… kicking!
- Many times they have also killed lions.
- Even though they are aggressive though, they are herbivores which means they don’t eat other animals.
- There are 3 kinds of zebras: plains zebra, Grevy’s zebra, and mountain zebra.
- Grevy’s zebra is endangered species!
- Romans used Grévy’s zebras to pull two-wheeled carts for their circuses.
- In Roman Circuses the zebra was usually called a ‘Tiger-Horse’ or a ‘Horse-Tiger’.
- Scientists believe that their stripes have 3 roles.
- At first, they serve as sunscreen and bug repellent.
- A zebra’s stripy coat is thought to disperse more than 70% of incoming heat.
- They also act as camouflage.
- They also help them recognize each other in order to socialize.
- They are not sure about the stripes’ roles though.
- The most common species is the plains zebra, which live in eastern and southern Africa.
- The Grevy’s zebra can be found in dry, semi-desert areas of Kenya and Ethiopia.
- The mountain zebra lives in mountainous and hilly habitats in Namibia, Angola, and South Africa.
- Zebras are always on the go trying to find grass to eat and water to drink.
- Zebras run in a zig-zag pattern when being chased by a predator.
- This is how they make it harder for the predator to catch them.
- A group of zebras is called a “zeal”.
- A zeal consists of 1 male and the females who follow him.
- A mother zebra keeps the “baby zebra” away from the group for 2-3 days until it starts understanding her smell, her voice, and general appearance.
- Zebras probably can see color even though the majority of mammals can’t.
- They can’t see orange though.
- A zebra can run up to 65 km/h.
- Zebras make many noises, some of which are the same as horses while others are unique.
- Zebras sleep while standing on their feet.
- Also, they normally sleep while they feel safe, which means they sleep while being in the “zeal”.
- Crocodiles, leopards, hyenas and wild dogs are some of zebra’s natural enemies.
- In the wild zebras can live up to 25 years.
- It is legal to own a zebra in most of the States of the U.S.A
