Power Rangers (billed as Saban’s Power Rangers) is an upcoming superhero film directed by Dean Israelite and written by John Gatins, Kieran Mulroney, Michele Mulroney, and Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The film is based on the franchise of the same name, it stars Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks.
- Bryan Cranston, who plays Zordon in the film, had previously voiced the monsters Twin Man and Snizzard in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993). Additionally, the first Blue Ranger Billy Cranston was named after Cranston himself.
- The Angel Grove High logo in the film is the same one used in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993).
- In Trini’s bedroom there is a window that features a circle with a tiger’s head; this was the Yellow Ranger’s original Power Coin design in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993).
- Originally scheduled for release on July 22, 2016, Lionsgate delayed the release to January 2017 to allow the film “room to grow.” The date was pushed again to March 24, 2017.
- The Power Ranger uniforms have been upgraded from spandex armor to an alien crystal that forms around the rangers.
- This is the third Power Rangers movie to be on the big screen, after Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) & Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (1997). However, this is a reboot of the series and is not connected to these two films.
- Some Angel Grove street signs read “Reefside” and “Ocean Bluff Rd.” These are a reference to Power Rangers DinoThunder (2004) and Power Rangers Jungle Fury (2008), which were set in the cities of Reefside and Ocean Bluff.
- First theatrical Power Rangers movie in 20 years.
- At one point the Yellow Ranger Trini wears a shirt that reads 1973. This was the year that the original Trini Thuy Trang was born.
- The first Power Rangers movie to receive a PG-13 rating.
- The Power Morphers in this film are based on the Power Coins from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993) (a set of coins with animal motif) and the Dino Gems from Power Rangers DinoThunder (2004) (a set of colored jewels that grant superpowers).
- The producers cite Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films and the teen dramedy The Breakfast Club (1985) as an influence on the film. Elizabeth Banks (Rita Repulsa in this film) co-starred in Raimi’s Spider-Man films as Betty Brant.
- The teaser trailer generated more than 150 million views in it’s first 48 hours.
- Zack is excited at being a Black ranger, which the black character Billy is slightly offended by. This is a joke as in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993) Zack Taylor was a black character.
- Robbie Amell wanted to portray the Red Ranger after a fan posted a photo of him.
- Stefanie Scott and AnnaSophia Robb were considered for the role of Kimberly Ann Hart.
- In an early draft by Max Landis, the writer switched the colors of both Kimberly and Zack, making Zack the Pink Ranger and Kimberly the Black Ranger. This concept was quickly scrapped.
- This is the first Power Rangers movie to feature the characters Jason, Zack, & Trini as Rangers. Jason had previously appeared in Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie (1997) but was a civilian, while Zack and Trini make their film debut for the first time.
- The Saban Entertainment and Lionsgate logos are colored red, blue, black, yellow and pink, the original Power Ranger colors.
- Being filmed in Steveston, British Columbia which is the same place that Once Upon a Time is filmed and Charlie St. Cloud was filmed.
- Roberto Orci was originally going to produce the film, but has dropped out due to commitments with Star Trek Beyond (2016).
- Unlike in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993) where Kimberly is romantically involved with Tommy and in Power Rangers Zeo (1996) where Jason is romantic involved with Emily, Jason and Kimberly are romantically involved with each other in the film which is shown in the trailer.
- Mercedes McNab has stated that she has been a fan since she was a young girl and would love to be part of the film.
- Director Dean Israelite is cousin to director Jonathan Liebesman, who directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014). Both the Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles teamed up in Power Rangers in Space: Shell Shocked (1998).
- Jason’s vehicle is a red Ford Ranger.
- When the ZORDS one sheets were sent to theaters for display, they only sent out two rangers per theater. This is different because usually theaters will get a complete set for each poster release. So this will make the collect-ability of said posters more of a challenge, and will most likely lead to more online poster purchases from third party. For an actual set of posters attained from a theater will be more difficult.
- This will be the first Power Rangers feature to be shot in Canada.
- The Rangers having their visors remove was taken from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie (1995) (scenes deleted), Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue (2000) and Power Rangers Ninja Storm (2003).
- Original treatment was written by Max Landis
- K.J. Apa, Enrique Alejandro, Mitchell Hope and Austin Butler were considered for the role of Jason Lee Scott.
- Daniel Zovatto, Ross Butler and Brian ‘Sene’ Marc were considered for the role of Zack Taylor.
- Canadian actress Crystal Lowe is in talks for a supporting role.
