- After Rendell Locke is murdered at the hands of former student Sam Lesser, his wife Nina decides to move with her three children, Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode, from Seattle to Matheson, Massachusetts, and take residence in Rendell’s family home, Keyhouse. The children soon discover a number of mysterious keys throughout the house that can be used to unlock various doors in magical ways. They soon become aware, though, of a demonic entity that is also searching for the keys for its own malevolent purposes.
- The Key House exterior and interior is completely built from scratch by Netflix.
- The pilot was originally shot for streaming service, Hulu, who decided to pass on the pilot, and it was then picked up by rival streaming service, Netflix
- Jackson Robert Scott (Bode) also played in the 2017 remake of IT and its sequel.
- IT was created by Stephen King, whose son Joe Hill is the creator of the comics on which this show is based.
- The original comic book takes place in Lovecraft, Massachusetts, which is a tribute to H.P.
- Lovecraft, a 19/20th century author of gothic horror stories. It was changed to Matheson in honor of writer Richard Matheson, whose work provided much of the inspiration for the original comic.
- In the final episode of season 1, the ambulance driver with the beard is Locke and Key creator Joe Hill.
- This is the 3rd pilot based on the comic book series, Locke and Key, and the third attempt at an adaptation.
- The first pilot was shot in 2010 by Fox, but was not picked up by them, and screened at the following year’s San Diego Comic Con. The second failed attempt was a movie adaptation by Universal Studios.
- Kinsey’s head mall is the same as Starcourt Mall from Stranger Things, another Netflix show.
- In season 1 episode 1 the famous treasure island, Oak Island, is visible on the cliff when Tyler is about to smoke a joint.
- The whispers are a plot device in “Locke & Key.” The whispers are also a plot device used prominently on Carlton Cuse’s other show, “Lost.”
- Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill serve as co-showrunners.
- Aaron Ashmore, who plays Uncle Duncan, is the twin brother of fellow actor Shawn Ashmore.
- Shawn Ashmore has been in the X-Men movie and The Boys.
- Locke & Key, based off of works by Joe Hill (Joseph King) and Gabriel Rodriguez, filmed a number of scenes in the historic town of Lunenburg in Nova Scotia, Canada.
- Also filmed in Lunenburg is the TV show ‘Haven’ which is based off “The Colorado Kid” by Stephen King, father of Joseph King.
- Jackson Robert Scott played Georgie in IT: Chapter 1 (2017) and his character famously yells the line “You’ll float too!” which has been used as a tag line for the movie. In this series, there is a scene where he uses the ghost key to turn himself into a ghost and yells the line “I am floating!”
- When Netflix swapped up Locke & Key from Hulu, they may have kept much of the core of the show’s vision, but Netflix still had some personal changes to make. Paramount was that Netflix recast almost the entirety of Locke & Key’s ensemble cast. The only key actor that remained on the project was Jackson Robert Scott as Bode Locke.
- Netflix’s Locke & Key expands on the comic in a number of ways, including the creation of a new keys for the Locke kids to discover. These include the mirror key, the matchstick key, the music box key, and the flower key. The identity key in the comics is also originally two separate keys, one which changed your gender and one that changed your race (probably smart to combine into one in this case).
- Exciting news for fans of the comic was that, around the time of Netflix’s show release, Hill and Rodriguez announced that they would be returning to Locke & Key with a new series that would be titled World War Key. Unlike the recent string of one-shot comics, this would be an ongoing series. Whether this new comic will tie into future seasons of the show however remains to be seen.
