In the 16th century sailors were cut off from normal life on shore for months, even years and they had to live under cruel conditions.
They had to face diseases, poor food and pay, as well as dangers of sea and weather.
In order for the sailors to ensure a normal burial, they used to wear gold earrings so that when they died, they could pay for it!
