The origin of the word ‘cerberus’ is lied on the Greek word ‘Kerberos’ (κέρβερος). The name “Cerberus” is a Latinised version of the Greek form.
It may be connected to the Sanskrit word “sarvarā”, used as an epithet of one of the dogs of Yama, from a Proto-Indo-European word ḱerberos, meaning “spotted”, however, ‘b’ is extremely rare in Proto-Indo-European, which makes linguists sceptic.
