Did you know that once upon a time carrots used to be purple, yellow, white and pink?
The reason why carrots are orange nowadays is because in the 17th century, Dutch growers are thought to have cultivated orange carrots as a tribute to William of Orange – who led the the struggle for Dutch independence during the 1700s.
All our modern, western carrots ultimately descend from these varieties.
